I'm growing things!

Last summer, I attempted to grow herbs, peppers, tomatoes and more.  It was a bust!  The birds ate my peppers, other animals ate my tomatoes, and my lettuce burned in the sun.  This year, I've planted my crops in pots!  My peppers, herbs, and tomatoes are in the screened porch to keep away the creatures and my lettuce is in the house, safely air conditioned from the heat. I predict a better year for gardening!

Outside, I've planted some annuals in pretty colors to highlight the house.  So domestic!  I enjoy being part of God's creation and beauty.  There is a satisfaction in nurturing something that will soon bear fruit.

My husband and I are hoping to become more environmental, economical and healthy by making additional changes in our home lives.  We began composting almost two years ago.  We added a rain water barrel last summer.  We purchased a gas dryer through craigslist.  We installed a water filter and bought re-usable water bottles for the family.  Now, we will grow organic vegetables and herbs in our own home.

The learning process is truly a blast!  I found worms in my compost pile when I thought we might need to purchase worms.  They moved in all by themselves. Along the bug line, I'll probably need to purchase ladybugs for the veggies on the porch to help with aphids and pollination.  But, maybe they will fly in on their own too.

On my list:  hanging our clothes to dry, moving the compost pile to a new corner and planting over the previous pile and finding solutions to reduce the amount of gas we consume in driving.

We are making daily decisions to better steward God's provisions for our lives. This is satisfying and fun!

Challenge for today:  Go plant something!  If you struggle with plants dying, find one hard to kill!  There are several options - ask at your local nursery.
